Mothman

Mothman is a large, humanoid bird-like creature originating from a series of alleged sightings in a Virginian town from the years 1966 to 1967. Described as being a dark human figure much taller than an average person with large wings and glowing red eyes. After its first initial sighting, and subsequent ones following it, it was very quickly sensationalised by newspapers at the time.

Many believe the sightings to be that of large birds such as herons, owls, or cranes. Some believed the sandhill crane to be the best candidate, as it is almost 7 ft in height and has large areas of red flesh around its eyes, however its migration path did not line up with the areas where Mothman was spotted and its likely that another bird was the culprit.

The city in which Mothman was originally seen, point pleasant, is well known for the myth and has embraced it as part of its identity. In an attempt to garner tourism, the city has introduced things such as annual celebrations, a large statue, and a museum, all revolving around Mothman, imbuing it as an integral part of the city’s identity.
